The DiskMantler™
Automated HDD Disassembly

|
Patent-Pending. Recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy with the E-SCRAP Prize for sustainable innovation.
The DiskMantler uses a controlled combination of shock, harmonics, and vibration to loosen all fasteners simultaneously. Rather than cutting or shredding, this mechanical process allows drive components to separate cleanly into distinct material streams, including rare-earth magnets, printed circuit boards, aluminum, and steel. The result is clean, uncontaminated output ready for downstream recycling.
The DeMAG™
Advanced Demagnetization and Data Sanitization
|
|
Patent-Pending.
Before disassembly begins, hard drives pass through the DeMAG™, where high-intensity, multi-pulse magnetic fields demagnetize the entire drive, including the internal neodymium magnets and disk platters. If left magnetized, the magnets act like a vise, holding the head and actuator assembly together. Demagnetization removes this “magnetic clamp” effect, allowing the disk components to separate easily during disassembly. Demagnetized magnets provide the additional benefits of being safer to handle and easier to recycle.
Why the DiskMantler™ Suite Matters
Traditional shredding produces a mixed, contaminated output that often requires centralized, energy-intensive downstream processing. The DiskMantler™ Suite reverses this model by separating materials at the front end by first demagnetizing drives and sanitizing data with the DeMAG™, then disassembling them with the DiskMantler™. This approach creates clean, high-value component streams that can be routed directly to the appropriate processor, reducing handling, shipping, and waste.
If additional component size reduction is required, any downstream shredding becomes faster and more efficient because components are separated and can be easily sorted. Printed circuit boards can be processed as a dedicated stream, while rare-earth magnets are recovered intact, clean, and demagnetized. This eliminates magnet clumping, reduces shredder wear and prevents maintenance-related downtime.
Designed and built for forward-thinking data centers, recyclers, and organizations focused on sustainable and secure media disposition, the DiskMantler Suite preserves critical materials for reuse within the supply chain while delivering irreversible data sanitization.
The Results
A scalable, end-to-end workflow that demagnetizes neodymium magnets, permanently destroys data, and cleanly separates HDD components into high-value material streams for responsible e-waste management and recycling, delivering performance only the DiskMantler™ Suite can provide.

Key Benefits
The DiskMantlerTM cleanly separates hard drive components, including neodymium magnets (when paired with the DeMAGTM), printed circuit boards, platters, aluminum casings, and voice coils. By eliminating shredding and material cross-contamination, each material stream is preserved in its highest-value form, enabling more efficient, higher-yield recycling.
Reduces scrap, slag (metals lost in smelting), and toxic emissions such as shredder dust. By preserving critical materials in reusable form, the DiskMantlerTM supports a circular supply chain and strengthens domestic manufacturing resilience.
The DeMAGTM applies high-intensity, multi-pulse electromagnetic force to demagnetize the neodymium magnets inside each drive, enabling safe handling, clean separation during disassembly, and improved rare-earth recovery. At the same time, 100% of data on magnetic hard disk drives is permanently eliminated, preventing any form of forensic recovery.
Designed for continuous operation with minimal operator involvement and low maintenance requirements. Optional conveyors, stackers, and robotic feed systems support high-throughput environments and scalable deployment.
The DiskMantlerTM is successfully deployed across data centers, IT asset disposition (ITAD) operations, and recycling facilities. Systems are configured for scalability, including multi-unit parallel lines capable of processing hundreds to thousands of hard drives per day.
Field deployments demonstrate consistent throughput, high uptime, and high-purity material recovery, particularly for neodymium magnets and aluminum components, supporting both operational efficiency and downstream recycling value.

The DiskMantler™ Suite Beyond Hard Drives
Custom Solutions for Specialized Disassembly and Demagnetization
The DiskMantler Suite extends well beyond standard hard drive processing. Built on the modular DeMAG™ and DiskMantler™ platforms, Garner Products develops custom demagnetization and disassembly solutions to address specialized formats, materials, and operational challenges across the electronics lifecycle. These tailored systems enable secure data destruction, magnetic neutralization, and high-value material recovery for a wide range of applications.
A leading smartphone manufacturer required demagnetization of magnets in retired mobile devices to optimize rare-earth element recovery. Garner Products delivered a custom TS-4XT DeMAG™ with a modified drawer and software designed to accommodate modern phone formats. The solution enabled clean separation of magnets and improved downstream recycling efficiency.
A high-volume HDD manufacturer needed to demagnetize 50 disk platters simultaneously during the assembly process. Garner Products developed the DFI 515, a specialized DeMAG™ system engineered to demagnetize 50-unit disk cassettes in a single cycle. The result was magnetically neutral platters, optimized for assembly and production throughput.
Certain high-capacity drives feature welded seams that prevent access to internal components, making standard disassembly methods slow or ineffective. To solve this challenge, Garner Products engineered the DiskMantler™ Edge, a custom scoring tool designed to score and safely open the welded seams. Paired with the DiskMantler™, this solution enables fast, precise disassembly while preserving internal components and maintaining high-throughput recovery for large-capacity drives.
The DiskMantler™ is capable of processing HAMR (Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording) drives. Using controlled shock, harmonics, and vibration, the system shatters HAMR platters into small pieces during disassembly.
Frequently Asked Questions
The DeMAG applies high intensity, multi-pulse electromagnetic forces to demagnetize the neodymium magnets inside each drive, enabling safe handling, clean separation during disassembly, and effortless rare earth magnet recovery. At the same time, 100% of the data on the magnetic hard disk drive is permanently eliminated preventing any form of forensic recovery.
