Frequently Asked Questions

Degaussing and Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I purchase Garner data elimination equipment?

You can purchase directly from us or through our extensive network of dealers and distributors around the world. For more information, contact us by email at info@garner-products.com or by phone at 800-624-1903.

Are the magnetic field generated by your degaussers safe?

According to the results of a multiyear study by the World Health Organization (WHO), “Despite extensive research, to date there is no evidence to conclude that exposure to low level electromagnetic fields is harmful to human health.” In addition, the amount of magnetic field exposure to people 12 to 18 inches away from a Garner degausser is extremely low, approximately 1/120th of the limit recommended by the American Conference of Industrial Hygienists, the scientific body that issues exposure recommendations for magnetic emissions. For more information, download our white paper, Magnetic Fields Discussion.

Why is degaussing considered to be the best way to erase data from hard drives and tapes?

Degaussing eliminates data physically (not via software) from the hard drive platters or from tape film by producing a magnetic field sufficient to neutralize the magnetic particles.  Sanitization methods such as overwriting, secure erase, shredding, physical destruction or encryption leave data that could potentially be recovered through software or laboratory methods available now or in the near future.  Degaussing with a machine that produces sufficient field strength produces permanent erasure. Data on degaussed media is gone and cannot be recovered with existing or future technology. Visit our White Paper section for more in-depth information about the degaussing process.

Will degaussing erase data contained on solid-state hard drives (SSDs) used in laptops and tablets, flash drives, USB thumb drives, etc.?

No, solid-state drives and other flash media do not use magnetic technology to store data. Instead, the data is stored on memory chips, which must be physically destroyed.  Piercing the drives to break the chips eliminates data, as long as all chips are destroyed.

TS-1

The TS-1 generates and evenly distributes 20,000 gauss (2 Tesla) magnetic field. The TS-1 delivers maximum erasure to every area of the hard drive or tape, no matter how drives or tapes are oriented in the media drawer.
 hd2rev3

HD-2

The compact HD-2 is ideal in an office setting for erasing laptop, desktop, and network high coercivity (magnetic) drives up to 1.25 inches high, as well as the full range of tape cartridge media, with no adapters needed.
 PD4 refurb

PD-4

The PD-4 physically destroys hard drives by bending, breaking, and mangling the hard drive and its internal components including the data platters. The PD-4 bends the data platters preventing the hard drive from "spinning up". The PD-4 also cracks the hard-drive housing, breaks the PC board, and smashes the read-write heads.

Secure Erase

Secure Erase

Secure Erase is a function that is built into many memory storage devices by the manufacturer.  Invoking the Secure Erase command overwrites the data on the drive by writing ‘I’s and ‘0’s over all the data fields, in some cases as many as three times.  This process can take quite some time, and therefore more electrical power.  The advantage is that it is designed by the manufacturer so in theory there are no device/software compatibility issues, and it renders the data safe from most methods of extraction while leaving the drive re-usable.

There are some nuances though.  The Secure Erase function must be accessed ‘externally’, you cannot invoke it from within Windows for example as the drive would have to erase itself while running….in the case of bad sectors or a bad drive, the Secure Erase function will not overwrite the bad sectors or the bad drive.

In the case of SSDs, the issue is a little more complex due to the FTL-the flash translation layer that manages who and where data is stored on an SSD; the fact that SSDs overprovision data; and that you may need to destroy the drive’s controller.

The FTL  is a set of software instructions that manage how and where data is stored on a SSD, it is not the linear arrangement found on a HDD. Because SSDs physically wear faster as they are re-written, the FTL manages a process to spread the data across the entire drive as much as possible to spread the wear evenly across the drive.  A document that is edited is not replaced where it was, the new version will be put into the next designated to be worn section, leaving the original intact until a subsequent round of data writing overwrites the original with new data.  The FTL assumes that this original data site is blank, so a Secure Erase function must write to every known location on the drive-whether the FTL thinks it is blank or not. By the same token, the over provisioning means there are data ‘places’ above and beyond the stated capacity of the drive that are used as temporary storage locations by the FTL as it manages wear—these over provisioned locations must be erased as well.

Some of the Secure Erase functions work by encrypting the data, and then simply destroying the encryption key.  In this case it is recommended that the controller is physically removed and destroyed.

Independent research into the effectiveness of Secure Erase has shown that in a significant percentage of cases the program was either ineffective or run incorrectly, resulting in recoverable data on the drive, therefore the is not an accepted sanitization technique for the NSA, CIA, DoD.

How to Destroy a Hard Drive

How to Destroy a Hard Drive

Destroying a hard drive can be accomplished with home remedies, i.e., shooting it with a gun, drilling a hole in it or throwing it in a fire pit.  More commercial methods of destruction of a hard drive include shredding and crushing. Government and NSA sanctioned methods for destroying a hard drive are disintegration, pulverization, incineration, and shredding.  Because of the permanency of these destruction methods, they are utilized when the media is at the end of its life cycle.

Although all of these hard drive destruction methods physically alter the casing of the hard drive, unfortunately they do little to purge the media of the confidential data contained on the hard drive itself.  Physically destroying the media does not remove the confidential data from the hard drive disk platters.  Because of this, certain government mandates and the NSA require that hard drives must first be purged or degaussed before the media is released for physical destruction.

Degaussing is the process of exposing the medial to a strong magnetic field to completely eliminate all data from working and non-working hard drives and tape.  Degaussing is magnetic destruction of a hard drive. Degaussing, however, does not alter the physical appearance of the hard drive.

In almost all situations, commercial and government hard drive physical destruction methods require utilizing a third-party vendor to transport the media from its secure location to the site of the physical destruction equipment.  Removing the media from its secure location before being purged of the confidential data and handing the media over to an outside vendor creates a significant risk of a data breach. For this reason, the NSA requires the media to first be degaussed before being handed over to a third party vendor.
