Garner Drives Home Importance of End-of-Life Data Security at Thomson Reuters’ Future of Data ProtectionForum

Michael Harstrick, Chief Global Development Officer of Garner Products, introduced new concepts of end-of-life data protection that will comply with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) being implemented in May 2018

Roseville, CA USA and London, UK – October 10, 2017 - Garner Products, Inc., the leader in data elimination and destruction, presented at the 6th Annual Thomson Reuters’ The Future of Data Protection Forum on October 5th. The forum focus was to gain a better understanding of compliance for the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) being implemented in May of 2018.

Michael Harstrick, Garner Products Chief Global Development Officer, presented to an audience of more than 250 C-suite attendees representing companies in the UK and throughout the European Union. Industries such as legal, privacy, banking, retail, food, and pharmaceutical are all in a race to become GDPR-operational and compliant by the implementation date.

“In both its complexity and vagueness, the GDPR has been quite a challenge for companies to understand and then implement this stack of regulations on top of their current state of business,” said Michael. “Data protection and privacy are serious issues and the responsibility of all companies that hold customer data. The problem is that companies are scrambling to find out how they can truly protect this data. That is why I am here in London.”

Do You Know Who May Have Your Data?

Michael spoke of the frequently overlooked but catastrophic consequences of physical data breaches. “While most attention regarding GDPR and current breaches such as Equifax are focused on cybersecurity, there is a highly dangerous vulnerability with data security breaches from stored, stockpiled, donated, resold, discarded, and recycled magnetic and solid-state media. These data landmines are not only real threats for data centers but every business throughout the world.

In presenting the potential danger to companies and their bottom line, share price, and customer base, as well as GDPR fines in the case of a data breach, Michael also offered powerful solutions to protect companies from the devastating aftermath of physical data breaches. While holding a storage disk for the audience to view, Michael reviewed the NSA/CSS-listed degaussing method of destroying data on damaged or retired disks.
